156th Day As An iOS Developer - CoreData Is Awesome

April 21, 2016 - 156th Day As An iOS Developer

THURSDAY - Finally! I got the time to try out and practice using the Core Data. I've been wanting to create a simple app that implements this for so long, I just couldn't find enough time to do it. I found a nice tutorial on Youtube how to implement Core Data to your application. But the thing is, the tutorial is quite out dated. By the way:
Core Data is an object graph and persistence framework provided by Apple in the OS X and iOS operating systems. It was introduced in Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger and iOS with iPhone SDK 3.0. It allows data organised by the relational entity–attribute model to be serialized into XML, binary, or SQLite stores.
I'm typing this post as a backlog, I actually made an app called: GPhoneBook app and I modified how it stores the data, thus I integrated the Core Data functionality. The data in this app originally is temporary. Just like what I've said, this post is a backlog, the GPhoneBook app was left in my old MacBook Pro in the office. I will try my best to make another one tonight using SWIFT! Alright! I will just make an update to this post as soon as I finish the version 2 of the GPhoneBook app.

FIN.

--- EDIT: I take back my word that I will be making the version 2 of the GPhoneBook app using Swift. I realised that I need to make a sample app for my up coming seminar/talk next weekend made in Objective-c, this will serve as a demo.

143rd Day As An iOS Developer - Preparing To Be A Future Speaker

April 4, 2016 - 143rd Day As An iOS Developer

MONDAY - Another old the same project. I was invited to speak in front of other developers. Most of them are student. So I must change my mindset from now on, I mean, I think I need to lessen the procrastination when I am at work. I need to lessen everything that is not contributing to my career growth (e.g Facebook while working).

Also, starting from today, I will study everyday, actually I already began making an app as part of my study, and this app will be my very demo in front of those students that will attend the Meetup. The name of the group (I just found this group on Facebook by the way,) is: ProgrammersDevelopers - not so cute name, I mean funny name.

What you can find in this group is mostly the mostly lazy students - people who don't know, apparently, how to google, and how to enter the keywords on any search engines that they need to enter in order for them to find appropriate answers to their almost-absurd questions.

What I will introduce to the students this coming Meetup of ProgrammersDevelopers group are these:

- Xcode
- Objective C (and probably a quick refresh to C programming language)
- iOS
- Core Data

134th Day As An iOS Developer - Storyboard and Core Data

March 18, 2016 - 134th Day As An iOS Developer

FRIDAY - Another last day of the week! Finally! I'm just doing bug fix for my current project. I'm so near to the end, and I'm just retouching the views and improving the functionalities of the app.

One thing hit me today, I realised that if the project will be composed of merely yourself, and you will never need a team to build the project, then do it using Storyboard. In that way, you would finish the app in next to no time and less coding. Although I really prefer doing the project all programmatically, I would use Storyboard in my next project. Why? The project that I'm doing today (the one that is near to be done), was made or being made programmatically, and it took me 3 weeks to complete it. - Yeah, given the fact that it was my first time in this project to use custom cells, collection views, and table views. There are many firsts that I experienced in this project. Thank you Lord! Thanks to the company for this opportunity.

Last thing I wanna share: I studied Core Data. Yes, finally, I got the time to study Core Data, yes, without using any 3rd party library like Magical Record. I enjoyed it. It's better compared to using SQLite directly. I'm excited to use Core Data again in my next project.

108th Day As An iOS Developer

Febraury 11, 2016 - 108th Day As An iOS Developer

THURSDAY - Today is the birthday of our CEO. Preparing for the birthdays of the two bosses here in the office has been a tradition in this company. One of the surprises is of course giving a gift to the CEO. The organisers in the office passed a portrait of our CEO to us and we wrote our personal messages in that picture. (Wait, as I was typing the first paragraph of this post, I saw my manager standing behind me, not so far from my laptop. I really just hope he didn't notice what I was typing. I'll be damn if he did so).

Anyway, here's my message to my boss:
Happy Birthday, Ms. T.! Enjoy your day. Thank you for everything, I'll be forever grateful that you hired me in this company. Best wishes to you and to this company.
Happy Birthday agian, boss.

Okay, let's go now to iOS Stuff. I realised, for the second time, that when you are generating or requesting an icon/image from ionicons or from Core Data, take the best resolution and size. For example, you will need a very small icon size that will be placed somewhere in your app, say 50x50 for iPhones and 100x100 if your app is running in iPads, then generate and request for a 150x150 - in that way, your icon will not be blurry.

One of my favourite fixes I've done for this week is fixing the bug in my intagram-like project. The bug was described like this: "Timer is still running even when you stopped the video." - Guess what's the quick fix here? I just checked out the native camera app in iOS and then I learned that they're implementing a delay before a user can stop the recorder. This simply means that you can't just spam the record and stop buttons at the same time. So what I did was, I implemented a timer (approximately 2 seconds) before a user can stop the recording of video. Easy fix!

107th Day As An iOS Developer

February 9, 2016 - 107th Day As An iOS Developer

WEDNESDAY - 2nd working day of the week! I did not do much work for today, you know why? Because our kind CTO handled some of my tickets, which I find quite hard for my part to do. Anyway, I learned something so important today. Guess what?

a. Core Data
b. How to make frameworks
c. SQLite for iOS
d. Unity for iOS

- The answer is CORE DATA. Alright, let me guess, this thing is about the data built in the iOS Device. Such as Assets (photos, videos, etc...). Learning this core data is so much essential, at least for me. I'm very thankful to know this. My next target to learn is the things given in my choices above. How to make frameworks, sqlite, and unity. - Oh, I almost forgot, SpriteKit.

UPDATE FEBRUARY 28: I just recently learned that really I am so dumb. Sorry for the confusion to those who have read this post already! CORE DATA is alternative to SQLite, basically a database.

68th Day As An iOS Developer With No Experience

December 5, 2015 - 68th Day As An iOS Developer With No Experience

I was thinking lately that I need to cut down the time I allocated in blogging. For istance, today is my 68th working day in the company, and I have nothing so worth sharing for, so I will save my effort for blogging for today and then combine the information to the next day.

Today, I was dealing with, kinda dealing, managed objects or what we call core data. I will study this in the future, I think this is necessary. My CTO used this in my main project to retrieve and store cache of PHassets of the device.
